Biography

Katherine Buckel is a Lecturer at Columbia Law School, where she supervises the Legal Aid Society's pro se immigration clinics. In this role, she assists clients with limited scope representation in affirmative defensive postures. Prior to her current position, she worked for ten years in detained removal defense as a supervising attorney and staff attorney, representing clients in Immigration Courts across New York and New Jersey, the Board of Immigration Appeals, New York Family Courts, and Federal District Court. Before joining Legal Aid in 2014, Buckel clerked for the Honorable Kathleen Tomlinson at the Eastern District of New York and worked in private practice at Latham & Watkins. She graduated cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in 2010 with a Certificate in Refugees and Humanitarian Emergencies, during which she participated in the Center for Applied Legal Studies asylum clinic and served as Vice President of the Human Rights Action student group. Buckel also has experience volunteering abroad in Quito, Ecuador, and Cairo, Egypt, and was a member of the Georgetown Immigration Law Journal. Before law school, she served as a Peace Corps volunteer for two years in Haiti and the Dominican Republic and obtained her B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating with the highest honors.
