Biography

Katherine Buse uses methods from science technology studies, science fiction studies, and environmental humanities to explore how science shapes cultural contexts. Her ongoing book project, titled Speculative Planetology: Science, Culture, Building Model Worlds, examines planetary world building and speculative planetology, focusing on shared practices among planetary climate scientists, creators of speculative fiction, engineers, and policymakers in the mid-20th century. Katherine also studies and designs video games, contributing to the design team of Foldit: Contact, a new narrative version of the citizen science video game Foldit. She received her Ph.D. in English with an emphasis on Science Technology Studies from the University of California, Davis in 2021. Katherine was a Marshall Scholar and earned an MA in Science Fiction Studies at the University of Liverpool and an MPhil in Criticism and Culture at Cambridge.
