Dr. Katherine Champion

Biography

Prior to taking her post as Senior Lecturer in Creative Industries and Cultural Policy at the University of Glasgow, Katherine Champion served as a Senior Lecturer in Media Communication at the University of Stirling from 2017 to 2024, where she also held the position of Research Director for the Divisions of Communications, Media and Culture and Programme Director for the MSc Media Management. Her research focuses on the relationship between place and cultural and creative industries, specifically emphasizing the significance of developing a scholarship around non-metropolitan cultural activity. She aims to broaden the geographical scope of research in Creative and Cultural Industries (CCIs) by bringing attention to vernacular sites of creativity and addressing the shortcomings of policy provisions in metropolitan areas. She has led projects funded by UKRI and SLIC, including currently being the Academic Lead on a project evidencing the social value of public libraries in collaboration with Stirling Libraries. Her emphasis on mapping the cultural and social infrastructures that are often overlooked in mainstream discourse on the creative economy helps reveal deeper spatial inequalities that are perpetuated by dominant policy frameworks.
