Biography

Katherine Faber is the Simon Ramo Professor of Materials Science at the California Institute of Technology. With a B.S. from Alfred University in 1975, an M.S. from Pennsylvania State University in 1978, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1982, she has focused her research on the mechanical behavior of brittle solids, structural ceramics, and coatings. Her work extends to porous solids and cultural heritage science, where she has applied advanced materials characterization techniques to the conservation of art. Faber's research also includes the study of ceramics for energy-related applications and thermal environmental barrier coatings for power generation components, as well as the use of molten regolith for electrolysis in metal production.
