Katherine Lebow is an Associate Professor of Modern History at Christ Church, University of Oxford. Her research primarily focuses on 20th century East Central Europe, with a particular emphasis on Poland. Her seminal work includes the book "Unfinished Utopia: Nowa Huta, Stalinism, Polish Society, 1949-56", which explores everyday politics under Stalinism in the Polish 'new town' of Nowa Huta and argues that waves of opposition to Communist rule were rooted in widespread engagement and participation in the project of 'building communism' in the wake of World War II. Currently, she is progressing a monograph titled "The People Write! Polish Everyman Autobiography and the Great Depression Holocaust", which draws on a unique body of autobiographical writings collected in Poland during the 1920s and 1930s, showcasing narratives of subjectivity and selfhood from marginalized groups. Her teaching and research interests also include Polish Jewish history and transnational Jewish politics in the 1980s. She is keen on discussing 20th century Central/Eastern/Southeastern European topics with prospective graduate students. In her teaching, she covers an array of subjects from European history to Jewish memory.
