Biography

Katherine Ornstein is a Professor and Director of the Center for Equity in Aging at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, with joint appointments in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She received her PhD in Epidemiology from Columbia University and was a predoctoral fellow in psychiatric epidemiology. Dr. Ornstein's work is primarily focused on improving healthcare for older adults and their caregivers, with a special emphasis on advancing equity in health. She is a recognized expert in home-based care delivery, family paid caregiving, and dementia care, especially regarding health care delivery at the end of life. Her research is funded by the NIH and CDC and includes studies on the economic effects of health care bereavement on families, the epidemiology of homebound populations, and the costs associated with dementia caregiving. Furthermore, she has contributed to understanding home-based palliative care and frailty trajectories among older adults. Dr. Ornstein has numerous publications reflecting her research interests and is committed to enhancing the wellbeing of aging populations.
