Dr. Katherine Ponte

Biography

Katherine Ponte is an award-winning mental health advocate, best-selling author, and nonprofit leader. She serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine. A child of Azorean-Portuguese immigrants, she grew up in some of the poorest neighborhoods in Canada, which sparked her commitment to education advocacy. Katherine has lived with severe bipolar disorder and psychosis for over 25 years and has experienced suicidal depression, as well as Tardive dyskinesia. Since reaching recovery in 2018, she has dedicated herself to helping others affected by mental illness. Her initiatives include sharing her lived experience and providing peer support. She is a member of the recovery finance team at Yale, focusing on research about financial services for low-income individuals, particularly those with mental health issues. Katherine is also a prolific author, contributing to various publications and presenting her insights at numerous conferences. Her peer-reviewed work has appeared in journals such as Psychiatric Services and Schizophrenia Bulletin. As a thought leader in mental health recovery, she has been featured in major news outlets discussing a wide range of topics related to mental health and recovery.
