Biography

Katherine Schaumberg is an Assistant Professor at the UW Comprehensive Diabetes Center at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her expertise lies in vulnerability to eating and weight concerns, as well as evidence-based treatments for psychological problems related to these issues. Dr. Schaumberg is integrally involved in projects that evaluate psychological and biological risks associated with eating and weight concerns, making significant contributions to the development, delivery, and evaluation of behavioral treatments for eating anxiety-based disorders. She possesses a strong background in quantitative methods and focuses specifically on the distinction between adaptive and maladaptive behaviors in individuals with eating disorders. With a particular interest in the high prevalence of maladaptive behaviors among patients with diabetes, such as 'diabulimia' in type 1 diabetes and binge-eating in type 2 diabetes, her research aims to understand the dispositional differences and environmental circumstances that influence the expression of positive habits versus problematic behavioral patterns. In her work, she plans to advance biopsychosocial models of behavior and identify risk factors that inform the conceptualization of maladaptive behavior, thereby promoting effective evidence-based treatment approaches for eating disorders and related conditions.
