Biography

Katherine Smollett joined CVR Genomics as a Research Associate in 2017, gaining extensive experience in viral genomics. She previously worked as a post-doctoral researcher investigating gene regulation in Mycobacterium tuberculosis at the MRC-National Institute for Medical Research, where she examined mechanisms of transcriptional control in Archaea. She holds a Doctorate in molecular microbiology from Imperial College London. At the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research, she focuses on providing the CVR community and collaborators with expertise in high-throughput sequencing to enhance understanding of viruses. Her current research emphasizes developing and implementing sequencing workflows for the discovery and characterization of emerging viral pathogens, utilizing a range of specialist techniques and technologies, including metagenomics, bulk transcriptomics, and targeted enrichment sequencing with Illumina and Oxford Nanopore instruments.
