Biography

Katherine R. Standish, MD, MS, is an Assistant Professor at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine. Her research focuses on clinical interventions aimed at improving breastfeeding outcomes and supporting families in achieving their infant feeding plans. She contributed to the founding of the Breastfeeding & Lactation Medicine Center at Boston Medical Center (BMC), where she emphasizes training, research, and clinical services in breastfeeding. Standish has completed her medical education at Yale University School of Medicine, followed by a family medicine residency and a research fellowship at Boston Medical Center. She is board-certified in Breastfeeding Lactation Medicine, having completed her fellowship training in the specialty at the University of Rochester. Fluent in Spanish, she has lived in Nicaragua and Mexico, enriching her understanding of diverse population needs. Her ongoing work aims to address disparities in breastfeeding support, particularly among Black mothers and infants. She currently leads various funded research projects, including a community-engaged development intervention supporting mothers with opioid use disorder and a pilot study examining hospital breastfeeding support disparities.
