Biography

Katherine Stewart is an Associate Professor in the College of Agriculture and Bioresources at the University of Saskatchewan. Her research focuses on restoration ecology and remediation, particularly in northern plant-soil systems. She investigates biologically mediated nitrogen input and cycling in arctic, alpine, and boreal ecosystems, aiming to identify methods for restoring sustainable pathways to promote long-term ecosystem health. Her research group works extensively with belowground soil systems and early successional soil surface communities, integrating approaches to examine the impacts of contaminants on the environment. Katherine collaborates with industrial partners across northern Canada to develop soil amendment technologies and reclamation practices aimed at restoring plant-soil systems affected by hydrocarbons, heavy metals, and herbicides.
