Biography

Kathleen Akins is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Simon Fraser University. Her research primarily focuses on the philosophy of mind, exploring metaphysical and epistemic issues related to mental representation, intentionality, color perception, embedded cognition, cognitive development, emotions, consciousness, and the self. With a neuro-philosophical approach, Dr. Akins’ work aims to bridge traditional philosophical problems with insights from recent neuroscience. This interdisciplinary perspective allows her to challenge conventional philosophical interpretations of topics like color vision through empirical literature and experimental findings. Currently, Dr. Akins is engaged in her largest research project, a monograph titled 'More Than Mere Colouring: Nature Spectral Vision,' which critically investigates the neurophysiology of color perception. Through her academic endeavors, she seeks to provide a deeper understanding of how philosophical insights can inform and advance neuroscience-related experiments.
