Biography

Kathryn Chan is a Professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Victoria and the director of the Faculty’s Graduate Studies Program as of July 2025. Her research and teaching focus on not-for-profit charity law, constitutional law, administrative law, and law and religion. Dr. Chan’s research interests include regulation of civil society, the intersection of law and religion, legal pluralism, and the divide between public law and private law. She authored the book 'Public-Private Nature of Charity Law,' published in 2016 by Hart Bloomsbury, and has published in leading law journals such as the University of Toronto Law Journal and the Canadian Bar Review. Since joining the Faculty of Law in 2013, Dr. Chan has actively contributed to the academic community, previously practicing not-for-profit charity law in Vancouver and serving as a member of the Canadian Bar Association's charity law executive. Notably, she received the UVic Law Students’ Society Terry J Wuester Award for excellence in teaching in 2023. With a strong academic background, she obtained her BMus (Honours) from McGill University, a JD from the University of Toronto, an LLM (Honours) from McGill University, and a DPhil in law from the University of Oxford.
