Biography

Kathryn Hamilton, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on the gut epithelium and its role in health and disease, utilizing patient-derived organoids to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying intestinal regeneration and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Hamilton's laboratory investigates the functions of RNA binding proteins in regulating gut physiology through post-transcriptional modifications and examines the behavior of epithelial stem cells in patients with chronic gastrointestinal diseases. Her work also includes studying fundamental intestinal epithelial biology using organoids from patients with rare, monogenic forms of IBD. She co-directs the Gastrointestinal Epithelium Modeling (GEM) Program at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, which aims to foster collaboration in patient-focused gastrointestinal organoid research.
