Kathryn King-Shier is a Professor jointly appointed in the Faculty of Nursing and the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary. She earned a BSc in Nursing from McMaster University in 1980, a Master of Nursing from the University of Alberta in 1993, and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Alberta in 1997. Following her doctoral studies, she completed post-doctoral training in the Faculty of Medicine, Division of Cardiology at the EPICORE Centre from 1997 to 1999, and joined the University of Calgary in 1999. Over the years, she has been awarded competitive research funding from various bodies including the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Dr. King-Shier is recognized as one of Canada's leading cardiovascular nursing scientists, having served on the Advisory Board for the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health from 2003 to 2008 and is a member of several editorial boards. Her research interests focus on cardiac care, determinants of heart health decisions, and the socio-cultural factors influencing access to care and recovery. She actively supervises Master's, PhD, and post-doctoral trainees in her field.
