Biography

Kathryn Gin Lum specializes in American religious history. Her research and teaching interests focus on the lived ramifications of religious beliefs, particularly the relationship between religion and racial othering in the United States. Lum is the author of "Damned Nation: Hell in America from the Revolution to Reconstruction" (Oxford University Press, 2014) and "Heathen: Religion, Race, and American History" (Harvard University Press, 2022). She is also the co-editor, along with Paul Harvey, of the "Oxford Handbook of Religion and Race in American History" (Oxford University Press, 2018). Since 2012, she has served as a professor in the Department of Religious Studies at Stanford University, where she also directs the American Religions in Global Context Initiative. Lum received her B.A. in History from Stanford University and her Ph.D. in History from Yale University. Her academic appointments have included assistant and associate professorships at Stanford, as well as roles at Princeton University, where she taught in the Department of Religion. Over the years, she has garnered numerous honors and awards, which reflect her contributions to the humanities and her role in advancing scholarship in religious studies.
