Biography

Kathryn McConnell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of British Columbia. Her research examines the social dynamics of climate change, with a focus on the intersection of climate hazards, the built environment, and population mobility. Motivated to use social science tools to inform equitable climate adaptation and mitigation efforts, her work spans topics like the relationship between the environment and migration, changes in housing infrastructure in response to climate-related hazards, and the politics of building and developing in a changing climate. Prior to joining UBC, she was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Brown University’s Population Studies and Training Center, where she utilized mixed methodological tools and collaborated with scholars in the biophysical sciences. McConnell's ongoing research includes a national study of the effects of wildfire destruction on migration patterns in the United States and qualitative studies of decision-making after wildfires. Her interests also delve into the physical changes in built environments and the exploration of climate politics as they relate to community responses to climate change.
