Biography

Joined the Department in 2005, Dr. Kathryn Ryan is an Instructional Associate Professor and the Undergraduate Research Coordinator at Texas A&M University. Her research focuses on the assembly of nuclear pore complexes (NPCs), which are essential for the transport of macromolecules between the nucleus and cytoplasm in eukaryotic cells. The research aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of NPC assembly and the factors necessary for its structural integrity. Dr. Ryan's lab utilizes Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model organism to investigate these processes. During her postdoctoral research, she conducted a genetic screen utilizing GFP-reporters in live cells to identify critical factors involved in NPC assembly. Her ongoing research includes characterizing mutants from the npa collection and defining the upstream and downstream events in the NPC assembly pathway. Through biochemical, cell biological, and genetic approaches, Dr. Ryan aims to elucidate the roles of vesicle-associated proteins and the interactions of Ran GTPase in the regulation of NPC assembly.
