Biography

Kathryn Slanski holds a joint appointment in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and the Humanities Program at Yale University. She was born at Yale-New Haven Hospital and has taught at institutions including Tel Aviv University, Fairfield University, and Harvard before joining the Yale faculty in 2004. Her research focuses on ancient Mesopotamia, examining the intersections of text and image, including themes of monumentality, sacred and secular authority, and the transmission and reception of literary, historical, religious, and visual traditions. Slanski has authored works such as "Babylonian Entitlement narûs (kudurrus): A Study in Form and Function" and is currently preparing a book that provides new text editions and photographs of the corpus of Babylonian Entitlement monuments. She has received various fellowships, including the Yale Kohut Fellowship and the Fulbright Fellowship (Munich), and is a Fellow of the Whitney Humanities Center as of 2006. Slanski teaches courses on ancient Near Eastern literature, history, religion, and languages, and has coordinated seminars related to interdisciplinary studies in these fields.
