Biography

Kathryn Takabvirwa is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Chicago. She earned her PhD from Stanford University in 2018. Her research focuses on policing, governance, migration, mobility, and post-coloniality, particularly in the context of Southern Africa, including Zimbabwe and South Africa. Takabvirwa examines how the public navigates their relationship with the state and citizenship, especially in light of histories of state violence. She is currently working on a book manuscript titled 'Ask Bribe,' which delves into the experiences of commuters and the dynamics of police interactions at roadblocks in Zimbabwe from 2012 to 2017, a period marked by the proliferation of official police roadblocks. Additionally, her interests extend to the politics of representation and the role of African fiction in generating theories of power, intimacy, and citizenship in Africanist studies.
