Dr. Kathryn Whetten

Biography

Kathryn Whetten is a Professor at the Sanford School of Public Policy and a Professor in the School of Nursing at Duke University. She is also a Research Professor of Global Health and serves as the Director of the Center for Health Policy and Inequalities Research. With over a decade of experience, she works with a multicultural team of researchers focused on addressing the needs of orphans in Africa who have lost their parents due to various challenges, including disease and conflict. Kathryn is not only the Principal Investigator on multiple grants but also actively publishes scientific articles and frequently mentors students. Her research primarily revolves around public health issues, mental health, and the impact of policy on health disparities. In recognition of her contributions to education, she was nominated for the Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award by Duke University in 2002. She has a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, with a portfolio that includes studies on the prevalence of workplace violence and the barriers faced by transgender individuals in accessing healthcare.
