Kathy de Jong is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at Memorial University of Newfoundland. She completed her PhD at Wilfrid Laurier University in 2020, following an MSW (with distinction) in 1995 and an honors BA in Sociology from McMaster University in 1991. Kathy has a rich background in social work, having spent 23 years working in Ontario, primarily in the field of Children’s Mental Health where she has held both clinical and administrative roles. Her research interests focus on critical mental health services, particularly as they pertain to 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and the service delivery systems they encounter. Kathy is deeply interested in the impacts of heteronormativity on service users and understanding the experiences of service providers in attempting to mitigate these effects. She aims to develop safer and more inclusive mental health service delivery systems for children, youth, and families, regardless of gender or sexual identity. Kathy is also passionate about teaching and creates practice-based courses that foster a transparent and engaging learning environment for her students, hoping to inspire the next generation of social workers to drive meaningful change in service delivery practices. Kathy acknowledges and respects the diverse Indigenous groups whose traditional territories the Memorial University campuses are situated on, including the Beothuk, Mi'kmaq, Innu, and Inuit.
