Dr. Katie Barott

Biography

Katie Barott is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on understanding the interactions between reef-building corals and their microbial symbionts, influencing both the biology and ecology of coral reef ecosystems. Coral reefs are increasingly affected by human activities and climate change, leading to her interest in how coral hosts and their algal and bacterial symbionts respond to environmental stressors such as temperature and ocean acidification. Her laboratory employs a combination of cell biology, organismal physiology, and microbial ecology approaches, alongside field experiments and observations, to address these questions. Dr. Barott has an extensive academic background, having completed her B.S. at Michigan State University in 2006, a Ph.D. at San Diego State University in 2012, followed by postdoctoral positions at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology.
