Biography

Katie Moore is a Senior Lecturer in Materials Characterisation at the University of Manchester, where she has been since October 2014. She holds a D.Phil in Materials Science from the University of Oxford, where she also completed her MEng in Materials Science. Her research primarily focuses on the application of NanoSIMS (Nanoscale Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) to investigate trace element uptake in crops, including the uptake of arsenic in rice and iron in wheat grains. Moore’s expertise includes essential techniques for the detection of hydrogen and deuterium in various materials, particularly in relation to the study of hydrogen embrittlement in alloys. She has led numerous projects on hydrogen diffusion and corrosion in zirconium alloys used in nuclear applications, and her work significantly contributes to the development of alloy materials that resist hydrogen embrittlement. In addition, she has been involved in several committees, such as the UKSAF, and contributes to the advancement of educational practices through her fellowship with the Higher Education Academy. Her recent research also delves into the implications of trace elements on human health through agricultural produce.
