Biography

Dr. Katinka Stecina is a systems physiologist focused on studying mature spinal neural networks through functional electrophysiological methods. Her research investigates the role of thoracic cholinergic and serotonergic neurons in controlling walking, particularly using rodent models with advanced optogenetic and chemogenetic techniques. Additionally, she explores the potential of non-invasive electrical stimulation to enhance motor function rehabilitation in humans after spinal cord injuries. Dr. Stecina has established an independent laboratory at the University of Manitoba after completing her postdoctoral research in Gothenburg, Sweden, and in Copenhagen, Denmark. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and attained her PhD in Physiology from the University of Manitoba in 2006. At the University of Manitoba, she is a principal investigator at the Spinal Cord Research Centre and works in collaboration with colleagues to promote research in spinal cord injury, aiming to translate basic science findings into innovative rehabilitation strategies.
