Dr. Katleen Gabriels

Biography

Katleen Gabriels is a moral philosopher and scholar of technology, specializing in the philosophical and ethical aspects of technology. She works as an Associate Professor at Maastricht University (FASoS, Department of Philosophy). Her research investigates the mutual shaping of morality and computer technologies, including AI, monitoring technologies, and virtual reality. She publishes conceptual and philosophical research that combines solid philosophical grounding with empirical studies. Her work appears in various renowned journals such as Computers in Human Behavior, New Media & Society, and the Journal of Medical Internet Research. Gabriels holds both BA and MA degrees in Germanic Philology from KU Leuven and Moral Sciences from Ghent University, and a doctoral degree in Philosophy from Vrije Universiteit Brussel. She has served as a postdoctoral researcher at VUB and the University of Vienna, and has experience as an Assistant Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology. In 2021, she was awarded the Edmond Hustinx Prize for Science and has significant expertise in science communication, frequently publishing opinion pieces and participating in public discussions. She has held numerous leadership roles in academic organizations related to ethics and technology, and is also involved in multiple funded research projects examining ethical issues in technology and AI.
