Biography

Katrin Andreasson is the Edward F. Irene Thiele Pimley Professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford University. With a background in Biology and Comparative Literature from Stanford and a Medical Doctorate from Columbia University, she focuses on the role of innate immune responses in the initiation and progression of neurological diseases. Her research highlights recent advances in human genetics related to neurodegenerative disorders, particularly Alzheimer’s disease, emphasizing the role of disrupted immune responses in disease pathogenesis. She investigates how injurious immune responses serve as common denominators in a range of neurological disorders, from acute brain trauma and strokes to chronic conditions such as epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. Her objectives include understanding aberrant immune responses that cause synapse loss and contribute to vulnerabilities in selected circuits involved in neurodegenerative disorders, as well as developing preventive therapeutic strategies targeting these inflammatory pathways.
