Dr. Katy Barkan

Biography

Katy Barkan is a Lecturer at the University of California, Los Angeles, specifically within the Department of Architecture and Urban Design. Since joining the faculty in 2014, she has established herself as a Los Angeles-based designer with a principal award-winning practice that intersects speculative and everyday design. Her current work spans across various domains, including buildings, furniture, exhibition design, and large-scale collaborations with artists. In 2020, Barkan received the Rome Prize in Architecture from the American Academy, further solidifying her reputation in the field. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, including showcases at the Venice Biennale and galleries at UCLA and Harvard's Graduate School of Design. Furthermore, her built projects and writings have been featured in esteemed publications such as Architectural Record, Log, and Inscriptions: Architecture Speech (Harvard University Press). Barkan holds a Master of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Arts from Barnard College. Prior to her tenure at UCLA, she worked with Artforum magazine and taught at Harvard's Graduate School of Design.
