Biography

Professor Kaushik Bhattacharya is a distinguished faculty member at the California Institute of Technology, focusing on the mechanical behavior of solids. He employs theoretical frameworks to guide the development of new materials. His current research encompasses several broad areas: active materials such as shape-memory alloys, ferroelectrics, and liquid crystal elastomers; heterogeneous materials, where he designs unprecedented properties by exploiting heterogeneities; and coarse-grained density functional theory to understand defects in solids. He has made significant contributions to continuum mechanics, mechanics of materials, and advanced topics in applied mechanics.
