Kaushik Dayal is the Walter J. Blenko, Sr. Professor with a courtesy appointment in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. His research interests lie in theoretical computational multiscale methods for applied problems in materials science, with a particular focus on bridging atomic and continuum scales in the context of functional behavior, non-equilibrium response, and electromagnetic effects. Dayal has received a B.Tech. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 2000, followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 2007. His work includes research on heterogeneous materials under extreme conditions, especially in relation to defense applications. He leads a team funded by the Department of Defense to improve the resilience of defense-related materials under various stresses and uncertainties. His focus is also on utilizing machine learning to enhance the development of functional soft materials.
