Biography

Kaveri Medappa is a postdoctoral researcher in human geography at the University of Oxford, focusing on labor anthropology and critical mobility studies. She holds a PhD in International Development from the University of Sussex, awarded in 2022, and has master's degrees in Gender Studies and Social Work. Kaveri's doctoral research was an ethnographic study of app-based food delivery workers and cab drivers in Bengaluru, India. She has taught both undergraduates and postgraduates in Anthropology and Social Work at the University of Sussex and St. Joseph’s College in Bengaluru. Kaveri is currently involved in a multi-institutional ESRC-funded project, 'Trucking Lives', which explores the working conditions of Heavy Goods Vehicle drivers in the UK. Her research interests also encompass feminist political economy, digital technology intersections, financialization, and social movements, employing ethnographic research methods. Kaveri has published numerous articles and contributions in various journals and books, addressing the dynamics of gig economy workers and labor issues in South Asia. Additionally, she has received several awards for her research, including the Highly Commended PhD Thesis Prize from the Development Studies Association in 2023 and the Chancellor’s International Research Scholarship from the University of Sussex.
