Dr. Kavi Bhalla

Biography

Kavi Bhalla is an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Chicago, with a focus on global health and injury prevention. His research aims to develop transport systems that are safe, sustainable, and equitable, with a central focus on road safety in low- and middle-income countries. Bhalla has recently concentrated on developing analytical tools to improve estimates of injury incidence in information-poor settings using available data sources. He co-led the injury expert group for the 2010 Global Burden Disease Project. Bhalla, who holds a PhD in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Cornell University, has a background as a mechanical engineer, with his thesis research concentrating on the mechanics of material failure and the applied study of injury biomechanics in vehicle crashworthiness. He is also broadly interested in designing products, environments, and systems that have positive health impacts. Bhalla has received fellowships from Harvard University, where he worked at the Initiative on Global Health and the Center for Population Development Studies, focusing on population health metrics and public health policy, respectively.
