Biography

Kavita Bala is a computer scientist and entrepreneur who became the 17th provost of Cornell University on January 1, 2025. She has a distinguished record in leadership and scholarship, having served as the inaugural dean of the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science and as chair of the department of Computer Science. Bala's foundational research focuses on computer vision, computer graphics, and artificial intelligence, earning her recognition through her election as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). As dean, she secured a naming gift for the Bowers College, facilitated faculty growth, and led the construction of a new building for robotics labs and experiential learning. Bala has advanced academic programs at Cornell and contributed to national initiatives on responsible generative AI use. Her contributions to image recognition, material modeling, and deep learning have led to the co-founding of a successful visual search AI startup. She received her B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
