Kay Macleod is a Professor in the Biological Sciences Division at the University of Chicago. She holds the title of Hospira Foundation Professor and is involved in the Department of Cancer Research, Committee on Cancer Biology, and Committee on Molecular Metabolism and Nutrition. Her research focuses on autophagy, cancer, cell migration and invasion, metastasis, mitochondria, stress responses, and tumor metabolism. The Macleod Lab investigates how mitochondrial mass and function, along with mitochondrial signaling, affect cellular responses and stress, as well as their influence on tissue maintenance and tumor growth. Key areas include the role of BNIP3-dependent mitophagy in liver metabolism and cancer, and the contrasting roles of BNIP3 and BNIP3L (NIX) in cellular growth control. She also studies the mechanisms of cancer cachexia and the effects of mitochondrial stress on signaling pathways involved in tumor responses to therapy.
