Biography

Kayla Smurthwaite is an epidemiologist and lecturer at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health. Her expertise lies in epidemiological study design, data analysis, and environmental epidemiology. Her PhD research focused on the exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in Australian communities affected by environmental contamination. She contributed to the PFAS Health Study and the Air Services Australia Study, assessing PFAS exposure. Currently, Kayla is the Convenor of the Human Health, Environment, and Climate Change course for the Masters of Public Health, where she teaches environmental health. Her research interests include public health, applied epidemiology, environmental health, human exposure, risk assessment, and persistent organic pollutants. She has undertaken systematic reviews and qualitative research related to community exposure to PFAS and has supervised students in these areas.
