Biography

Professor Kazuhiro Ito, PhD, DVM, currently serves as a Principal Research Fellow in Respiratory Molecular Pharmacology at the National Heart & Lung Institute (NHLI) of Imperial College London. He is recognized in both academia and the biotechnology industry, especially within the fields of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). His research spans basic, translational, and applied molecular pharmacology as well as clinical studies concerning respiratory diseases, emphasizing respiratory inflammation and infection. Kazuhiro's early research focused on epigenetic cell signaling in severe asthma and COPD, providing insights into corticosteroid therapy resistance. He has conducted extensive pharmacological studies of novel agents in collaboration with biotech firms and expanded his research to include lung aging and its impact on disease progression. As a co-founder of Imperial Spin-Off company RespiVert Ltd., he played a vital role in developing inhaled therapies that target resistant inflammation due to various respiratory afflictions. Kazuhiro has published over 150 peer-reviewed works and has successfully supervised numerous PhD and MSc students at Imperial. He holds additional academic positions in Japan and has a strong track record in inhaled drug discovery and antimicrobial resistance.
