Biography

Kees Klein Goldewijk is an Assistant Professor at Utrecht University with 35 years of experience in environmental research, emphasizing integrated global environmental assessments. His research focuses primarily on historical land-use modeling and reconstructions, making significant contributions to the understanding of how past land use has impacted the global carbon cycle and climate. He is the founder and developer of the History Database of Global Environment (HYDE) and has published extensively in the field of global environmental problems. Kees coordinates the teaching track for Earth, Environment, and Sustainability Science and is actively involved in several prominent research projects, including analyzing historical air pollution and assessing biodiversity losses tied to colonial land changes.
