Dr. Kees Ribbens

Biography

Kees Ribbens is an endowed professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam, specializing in Popular Historical Culture and Global Conflicts. He studied Modern History at the University of Nijmegen and earned his PhD from Utrecht University in 2001, focusing on the popular historical consciousness in the Netherlands from 1945 to 2000. Throughout his career, Ribbens has held positions as a researcher and lecturer at Utrecht University, Radboud University Nijmegen, and Erasmus University. He has served as the managing editor for the journal 'Tijdschrift voor Geschiedenis' and works as a senior researcher at NIOD. His research interests encompass public history in the broadest sense, with a focus on the history of World War memories and representations of war and mass violence from the twentieth to the twenty-first century. Ribbens has published extensively, including works such as 'Exhibiting War: The Future of World War II Museums in the Netherlands' and 'Oorlog op vijf continenten', and continues to explore themes related to national identity and collective memory in historical narratives.
