Biography

Keith’s research focuses on using a combination of data-driven methods such as deep learning and Bayesian statistics alongside quantum mechanics calculations to design new materials. His group collaborates with academics, national facilities, and companies, making strides in experimental characterization of materials. Keith serves as a deputy editor for npj Computational Materials and is on the editorial board of Machine Learning: Science and Technology, promoting open science and open software developments. He earned his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Trinity College Dublin in 2004 and completed his PhD in Computational Chemistry at University College London in 2006 under the supervision of Dewi Lewis, studying the nucleation and growth of zeolites. Keith conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Sheffield and the University of Bath, primarily focused on simulations of interfaces in photovoltaics, with particular interest in crystalline silicon solar and hybrid halide perovskites. His interest in machine learning for material discovery and analysis grew during his time at the University of Bath. Following roles at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and Queen Mary University of London, he returned to UCL as an Associate Professor in 2023. In his spare time, he enjoys fermentation and maintains a stable of kombucha.
