Biography

Keith E. Cook is the David Edward Schramm Professor and Head of the Biomedical Engineering Department at Carnegie Mellon University. He previously held the position of Research Associate Professor in Biomedical Engineering Surgery at the University of Michigan. Dr. Cook earned his B.S.E. in Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science from the University of Michigan and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University. His research is primarily focused on the design, development, and testing of artificial biofabricated lungs and biomaterials that enhance the longevity of artificial organs. Dr. Cook also explores contact system inhibitors that prevent clot formation on biomaterial surfaces and patient tissues, aiming to seamlessly integrate engineering with critical care medicine. He is recognized as a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and is an active member of several professional societies in his field. Cook serves as the Faculty Director for the Bioengineered Organs Initiative at Carnegie Mellon and is the CMU-side director for the Mayo Clinic - Carnegie Mellon Transforming Transplant initiative.
