Biography

Keith Sharkey educated at University of London (B.Sc. Hons., Nutrition) and University of Liverpool (Ph.D., Gastrointestinal Physiology). He began his academic career at the University of Calgary in 1990 as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and has remained there since, currently serving as a Professor in the Cumming School of Medicine, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. From 2005 to 2021, Dr. Sharkey held the Crohn’s Colitis Canada Chair in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research. His research focuses on the physiology and pathophysiology of the neural control of the gastrointestinal tract, specifically on brain-gut interactions in health and disease. Current interests include studying the role of the enteric nervous system in GI pathophysiology and the gut-brain axis in conditions like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He has published over 290 original peer-reviewed research articles and is a Fellow of the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology, Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, and the Royal Society of Canada.
