Professor Dr. Kelly Hawboldt

Biography

Kelly Hawboldt is a Professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland. With a strong background in Chemical Engineering, Dr. Hawboldt specializes in sustainable processing and extraction of natural resources, particularly in marine and forestry sectors. Her research focuses on green processing of biomass residues and the development of processes for the valorization of forestry and fishery waste. In her lab, she investigates pyrolysis techniques for biomass and collaborates with various disciplines to enhance product quality for applications in aquaculture and functional food. Dr. Hawboldt has contributed significantly to the Canadian Academy of Engineering and has received numerous accolades including the University Research Professor title in 2022 and the Engineering Excellence Graduate Supervision Award. Her work addresses the operational challenges of remote, rural areas by developing sustainable solutions. Additionally, her research on sulfur management in mining and oil-gas operations aims to inform better environmental practices and enhance the capability to treat stranded natural gas, facilitating cleaner energy solutions.
