Dr. Kelly Macfarlane

Biography

Kelly MacFarlane is a Full Teaching Professor in the Department of History, Classics, and Religion at the University of Alberta. With a PhD from the same institution, she has dedicated the past eighteen years to teaching at the university. Her primary research interests include Greek poetry, Latin pedagogy, and the teaching of ancient languages. Kelly has spent time at various universities, including Mount Allison University and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, before returning to her roots at the University of Alberta. Her research encompasses the analysis of ancient texts and their impact on modern understanding, focusing on works by Timotheus and Choerilus. MacFarlane is actively involved in curriculum development, particularly in introductory Latin courses, applying interactive methods to enhance learning. She aims to rejuvenate interest in Latin among students, promoting the language as a means of communication. In addition, she is engaged in scholarly activities related to Greek epic poetry and its cultural significance. Outside of academia, Kelly volunteers with a local cat rescue organization, advocating for adoption over shopping. Her extensive experience in teaching and research in Classics has made her a prominent figure in her field.
