Biography

Kelly Metcalf Pate is a veterinarian-scientist with expertise in virology and platelet immunology. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Metcalf Pate's research focuses on the role of platelets in the immune response to infectious diseases, with a particular emphasis on how platelets interact with other cells in the context of HIV and cytomegalovirus infections. Her recent work has expanded to include the influence of environmental factors, such as social stress and the microbiome, on immune response to viral infections. Before joining MIT, she was a faculty member at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where she contributed to the development and refinement of animal models of HIV pathogenesis. She also chaired the Center for AIDS Research Cure Scientific Working Group and oversaw research training programs for veterinarians and veterinary students. Dr. Metcalf Pate holds a D.V.M. from Purdue University and a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins. She is actively involved in national committees and chairs the Animal Welfare Advisory Board at the Morris Animal Foundation.
