Biography

Kelly Twomey Sanders is an Associate Professor in the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Southern California. Her research focuses on easing tensions in human-natural systems, with an emphasis on reducing environmental impacts in providing energy and water. She analyzes tensions surrounding climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies, anticipating the effects of climate change on energy systems. With over a dozen publications and numerous invited talks on the intersection of engineering, science, and policy, Sanders has made significant contributions to her field and has been recognized among Forbes’ 30 Under 30 and as one of MIT Technology Review’s 35 Innovators Under 35. She was awarded the NSF Early CAREER award in 2019. Her work has been featured in prominent media outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, WIRED, Bloomberg, and Scientific American. Sanders also teaches classes related to energy and the environment at USC.
