Dr. Ken Hirschkop

Biography

Ken Hirschkop is a Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Waterloo. Born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised near Boston, he began his academic career in music theory. He earned his DPhil from Oxford and has spent significant periods at the University of Southampton and the University of Manchester. At Southampton, he served as a Lecturer in the History and Theory of Communication, teaching a diverse range of courses. His tenure at Manchester included running a master's program in Cultural Criticism. Since moving to Waterloo in 2005, Hirschkop has focused his research on Mikhail Bakhtin and the theory of language. His work extends across several areas, including cultural and literary theory, politics of language, and critical media studies, with a particular interest in how mass cultural forms shape perceptions of 'the people' and inform populist political appeals. Hirschkop is actively involved in organizing scholarly events, including an annual International Conference on Games and Narrative. He has published multiple books and articles on Bakhtin and language theory, contributing significantly to the understanding of language in modern contexts.
