Ken Tamminga focuses on contextual ecology-informed design, accessible green spaces in cities, and the creation of novel restored ecosystems. He has collaborated on action research with colleagues on resilience-building projects across South Asia, Brazil, and sub-Saharan Africa, addressing the impacts of climate change and globalization. His current research interests include developing convivial greenstreets in dense urban cores and enhancing professional landscape planting practices in the northeastern United States to tackle climate and biodiversity challenges. Tamminga joined Penn State University in 1993 after eight years of consulting work in Ontario. During his decades of teaching, he has primarily focused on upper-level studios and courses about site ecology and planting. From 2008 to 2023, he led the award-winning Pittsburgh Studio, which allowed upper-year students to engage in design projects benefiting underserved communities. He served as the Director of Education Abroad from 2019 to 2023, contributing to the Department of Landscape Architecture’s sustainable cities program in Bonn, Germany, and co-leading a summer program in Barcelona. Tamminga was granted the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus in July 2024 and looks forward to continuing his research, travel, and selective consulting and teaching.
