Biography

Kendrick Oliver teaches and researches the history of the United States in the mid-twentieth century. He is particularly interested in exploring modern American political, social, and cultural responses to larger questions of human existence. This theme links his doctoral work on nuclear diplomacy to subsequent studies of memory, catastrophe, wartime atrocities, crime and punishment, as well as religion and technology in space exploration. His current research focuses on the social and cultural history of scientific cosmology in the United States. He has authored several books, including 'Lai Massacre: American History Memory' and 'Touching the Face of God: The Sacred, the Profane, and the American Space Program, 1957-75'. Oliver's current book project investigates the social and cultural history of the 'big bang' theory and the universe's origins, supported by the American Philosophical Society, the American Institute of Physics, and the Dibner History of Science Program at the Huntington Library. In the mid-2000s, he was instrumental in founding the Historians of Twentieth Century United States, serving as the organization’s chair from 2017 to 2020. He also held the position of Head of the Department of History at the University of Southampton from 2018 to 2022.
