Biography

I’m an Associate Professor and Associate Director of Faculty Development in the School of Engineering. I explore ideas, build teams, and mentor people to have a progressively positive impact on society. My research interests lie in optics, where I have built microscope disk drives, measured sound with light bouncing off mirrors, and developed real-time biophysical-based skin visualization tools. I’ve also mentored and invested in entrepreneurs who have created BC-based technology companies such as VO2 Master, which manufactures portable metabolic analyzers used by thousands of athletes, coaches, and researchers; Happipad, which provides technology-enabled home-sharing solutions to address Canada’s affordability crisis; and MantisXR, which creates immersive experiences for mobile devices in the sports industry. My work aims to reinvest in UBC and create a shared-fate model for university-community collaborations that transcend transactional engagement. By building unique experiences that blend academia, business, and entrepreneurship, I aim to foster mental, behavioral, and organizational models that encourage creativity and compassion in higher education. This is a fun and rewarding endeavor, where I prototype compelling answers to the vital question of what purpose universities serve. Collaborating on great ideas opens up exciting opportunities for all involved.
