Biography

Kenneth Grad is an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Law and leads the Winograd Initiative Study of Contemporary Hate Speech and Antisemitism. His research and teaching focus on criminal law, evidence, legal history, and human rights. Kenneth holds a B.A. from the University of Toronto, an M.A. in History from Queen's University, a J.D. (Gold Medal) from Osgoode Hall Law School, an LL.M. from Harvard Law School, and a Ph.D. His doctoral research explored the efficacy of criminal sanctions and regulatory measures used to combat hate speech, with an emphasis on the social and legal history surrounding high-profile prosecutions of Holocaust deniers. He has received numerous awards for his research, including the R. Roy McMurtry Fellowship, the Peter Oliver Prize, and other significant scholarships. Kenneth is also a frequent speaker on criminal law and legal approaches to hate speech, and his scholarly work has appeared in many top academic journals, such as the Osgoode Hall Law Journal and the Canadian Journal of Law and Technology. Before starting his academic career, Kenneth practiced criminal law and civil litigation in Toronto and New York, and served as a judicial law clerk at the Supreme Court of Canada.
